My son ensures me, Linux is more secure than Windows. Its quite possible for my file server to be accessed remotely from the WW net provided one has the correct passwords and I can prevail upon my son to set it up. It is remote from my computer so even if the house burned down, heaven forbid, all my files are backed up on the remote server. My son is better at IT than me, we dug out an old Dell computer, installed Linux and are now using it as a file server. I tried Lightroom Cloud but when I hit the free storage limit I was asked to pay more despite previously being offered "unlimited free storage" by Adobe. I have access to my photos from almost anywhere. I am very impressed by the CC (non-classic). That is why I decided to jump in and just get the space. No, then you'd have to purchase more cloud space from Adobe. It looks very promising if I can have access to my images from anywhere on any of my devices. I just upgraded my subscription and now have 1 TB of cloud space. What if the cloud space gets filled up? Would it then not rely on the local resources? Just don't use Lightroom CC if you don't want your photos in the cloud. There is not way to stop it from storing photos in the cloud. Lightroom CC (not Lightroom Classic CC) stores your photos in the cloud, with an option to also store them locally on your hard disk. I would like to use the unclassic CC though, if there is a way to configure it to use local resources instead of the cloud. I don't have any reason to use the cloud for my photography and I am sure it is a really handy feature for professional photographers. I couldn't find a way to tell it to stop using the cloud service and just use my local resources so I decided to uninstall it and use the boring Classic again. But I soon started getting a message that my cloud space is all filled up. Somehow I had both the CC versions of Lightroom installed and today accidentally I launched the CC (not Classic) and my jaw was on the floor - it is a fantastic version of LR with a much more intelligent user interface. The package that includes Photoshop CC and Bridge CC is worth every penny. I know CC stands for Creative Cloud and I have been subscribed without any regrets for at least two years now.
